Introduction

Welcome to the Kilvington Work Experience page. It is designed to give students in years 10-12 links to information covering a wide range of vocational information.

Guidelines to Work Experience

All Year 10 students are required to do five days of work experience. Year 10 students will arrange this under the guidance from the Head of Careers.

A list of employers that have taken Work Experience students from Kilvington last year is below, as are the necessary forms that need filling out and examples of letters of application and resumes that can be adapted to help you apply for work experience. You will need to send a resume and letter of application to all your work experience contacts as this is good experience for you and of interest to them no matter if they have already agreed to employment or not.

Year 10, 11 & 12 students may do work experience in their term holidays but not at the end of year Christmas holidays which are not covered for insurance purposes.

What to do
Refer to the computer quiz you have done to get an idea of what jobs you might be best suited to.
Get out the yellow pages or look online at www.yellowpages.com.au for large companies or refer to the list of past employers.
Ring them, don't forget to prepare yourself. Introduce yourself and ask for Human Resources or Personnel Departments.
Ask for the person coordinating work experience.
Have your dates ready. Have a pen ready to write down details to send your application out to.
Always thank them for their help and time, even if not successful
When someone agrees to having you, or asks for a resume, send it off promptly with a letter asking for the experience. Include the work arrangement form. Ask them to return it to your home address.
The principals signature should go onto the forms last. The school will organise this.
We will send a copy of the completed work arrangement form to the employer and your parents before work experience starts.

Work Experience is a wonderful opportunity to visit and see workplaces that are new and interest you. Please make the most of this opportunity, as it is rare to be given access into workplaces without actually being in employment there. Seek out jobs that are interesting and that you know little about. Watch and ask questions. Remember that learning is the most important thing that you will do during your work experience placement.

Aim of Work Experience
By learning to cope with new situations and new people and thus building up self-confidence and independence.
By learning about the changes taking place in society and in the workplace.
By learning in a practical way.
Work Experience allows students to explore a variety of career opportunities to decide how these relate to their personal interests, skills, values and goals.

Work Experience helps prepare students for life after school and gives an insight into the world of work.

Out of State

NB Interstate work experience is only available when a similar experience is NOT available in Victoria.

NSW Sydney and Environs : The NSW Education Department has to approve the placement.
Approval is difficult to obtain, and will only be considered if there is nothing comparable available in Victoria.

Border Areas : Students whose parents live close to the border or in NSW will be considered for work experience in NSW during the NSW School terms only, not in the NSW holidays.  These placements must also be approved by the N.S.W. Education Department.

South Australia. Only if the type of Work Experience is not available in Victoria. Arrangements are primarily for students in those schools situated in regions adjoining the border. Placements must be approved by the South Australian Education Department.

States with no Reciprocal Arrangements
Work Experience is very difficult to organise in states with no reciprocal arrangements with Victoria. Students are not covered by WorkCover in these states. Parents are required to take out insurance equivalent to WorkCover.  The  policy must be approved by the College before the placement can proceed.

Country Victoria. Students may do work experience in the country if they will be staying with their parents or relatives. A letter  from the parents, giving permission for the student to stay in the country is required.

Overseas Work Experience
Unfortunately it is not possible to organize work experience in another country.
The Government has legal requirements to cover students on work experience, these requirements can only be met within Australia.

Payment & WorkCover

Payment
Work Experience students are paid by the employer a minimum of $5.00 per day.  By paying the student, the Employer and the Student  are covered for WorkCover.  Organisations exempt from payment are Commonwealth Government Departments and non-profit charitable organisations such as Government  kindergartens and schools.

Paperwork (Or paper warfare)
Before a student can be involved in the program, the student, the prospective employer, a parent and the school Principal will be required to sign a Work Experience Arrangement Form (WEAF). Completion of the WEAF and the payment provides WorkCover for the student in the case of any personal accident occurring during Work Experience.

What to Expect
Students will be expected to:
Perform the tasks and duties which their supervisor asks them to do, to the best of their ability.
Follow instructions and abide by all the rules and regulations that apply to any full-time employee. You are not guests.
Dress suitably for the job.
Ask questions and make observations concerning their particular job and the place of work in society.
Carry out the tasks set for them: the time at work is not a holiday.
Observe the performance of people they are working with.
