Transitions

Children undergo three very large transitions during their school life:
Kindergarten to Prep, Year 6 to Year 7, and Senior School to University.

At Kilvington, we understand that children are especially susceptible to big changes, which is why we have made the process as smooth as possible by providing valuable support during these important moments in every child's schooling.

Transition from ELC to Prep

Many children and families look forward to starting Prep with excitement, whilst others feel a little nervous. To assist and support families and children with this transition, Kilvington offers a number of orientation events in the Term before starting Prep. We work closely with families to help ensure the experience is a positive one.

Transition from Year 6 to Year 7

Kilvington's transition program makes the exciting transition from Junior to Senior School into a special occasion, and helps students adjust quickly and comfortably to their new environment. At the end of Year 6, students are given the opportunity to participate in Senior School life for a day. This period allows them to preview the next year's experiences, and to get a feel for their new environment.

To ensure that our Year 7 students are as comfortable as possible, we have created a special half-day orientation session for them, which begins before the rest of School has begun. During this time, they can explore the Senior School campus and begin to feel at home.

Transition to VCE

The two years of VCE are the most challenging of school life. With this in mind, we have implemented a comprehensive adjustment program to prepare students for this significant change. Kilvington's two-week ‘Head Start’ program lays the groundwork for students’ future VCE success. During this time they refine their time management and study skills, both of which will be absolutely essential in the final two years of Senior School.

Several motivational speakers address students during this time. Two guest speakers featured in the past were ex-footballer Tom Hafey, and Daniel Dobos from Mental Blank Coaching. Both speakers talked to Year 10 students about the importance of maintaining focus and dedication in the years ahead. By the end of the Head Start program, students have gained a distinct advantage in terms of their future VCE performance.

Transition from Year 12 to University

The time between Senior School and University can be a challenging one, as students are required to make important choices that will affect their future careers.

To help students make the right choice about their time after VCE, ‘Gap Year’ providers are available throughout the year for consultation.

Kilvington’s Careers Day presents students with a full range of future options. Included on the day are motivational speakers, featuring people telling stories about the different paths their careers have taken.

We also strongly encourage students to attend University and TAFE Open Days, in order to gain more information about Melbourne's educational options.
