At Kilvington, the child is central to all our decisions. We provide a happy, safe environment where children take risks, secure in the knowledge that their efforts are supported and valued. Our school is characterised by warmth and mutual respect between students and staff. It is a place where students identify strongly with a community and know that they are an integral part of the whole. Kilvington’s size means that classes are small and individuals are noticed.
Curriculum
The curriculum, with its rigorous attention to the foundation skills of literacy and numeracy ensures best-practice standards. Teachers nurture individual differences and provide learning episodes that meet the students at their individual point of need. The implementation of the ’thinking curriculum’, that celebrates preferred learning styles within a collaborative organisational framework, has helped us establish a community of independent and inspired learners. Staff undertake regular and ongoing professional development and, as lifelong learners, provide excellent role models to their students.
The Arts
Junior School students have many performance opportunities and our new Music School provides a venue for budding musicians to flourish. The music program offers an involvement in orchestra, choirs, instrumental lessons, musical productions and concerts. Specialist teachers, enrich the visual arts program with passion and a high level of skill.
Physical Education
Physical education recognises the need for all girls to maintain a healthy lifestyle through fitness. An emphasis is placed on participation, enjoyment and the achievement of personal best. As a member of the Victorian Primary Schools Sports Association, Kilvington has the opportunity to compete in inter school sporting events and enjoys a high level of willing involvement. House affiliation is well developed and students are involved in a range of team sports such as soccer, football, tennis and basketball.
Leadership
At Kilvington girls are given many leadership opportunities. Junior School leaders organise and run assemblies and represent the school in the wider community. All forms elect Class Captains and Vice Captains and Sports Captains on a term basis. The Student Representative Council provides a forum where the ideas and concerns of the girls can be raised at both the Junior School and at a whole school level.
Religious Education
Pastoral care in the Junior School is part of our Christian philosophy. Under the supervision of our school Chaplain every class follows a comprehensive program of Religious Education.
We aim to assist girls to be confident and courageous, to love learning and embrace the new as an exciting possibility.
