Jon Charlton, Principal

Jon has a rich history of working with young people in schools, on the street, and in church.

Early in his career as a teacher, he worked at Elwood College as Student Welfare Coordinator. Following that, he fulfilled the roles of Chaplain, Counsellor and Daily Organiser at Kilvington Girls’ Grammar. In late 1999, Jon was appointed Head of Middle School at Kingswood College. While at the College, he led the development of an experiential City Campus for Year 9 students.

From 2003-2007, Jon held the role of Deputy Head (Pastoral Care) at St Michael’s Grammar School in St Kilda.
In 2008, Jon returned to Kilvington Grammar as Principal where he was instrumental in the decision to move to a co-ed school after a 90 year history as a girls’ school. He then spearheaded the School’s successful transition which resulted in considerable enrolment number increases and a thriving school.

Jon has trained and practised as a Baptist pastor working with young people in the Blackburn and St Kilda areas.

In 1995, through the St Kilda Baptist community, he was responsible for establishing Machaseh House, which provided 16-18 year old students, who were unable to live at home, a safe and secure environment so that they could complete their secondary education and improve their opportunities in life. Jon served on the Machaseh House Board for 18 years, six as Chair.

Jon has completed two degrees – a Science degree from Monash University and a Theological degree from Melbourne University.

Jon’s passion is to see all young people achieve their very best, and to become responsible and involved global citizens by helping others.

Davina McClure, Deputy Principal

Davina joined Kilvington Grammar as Deputy Principal in 2017. She has held teaching and leadership positions with The Hamilton and Alexandra College, St Michael’s Collegiate, Korowa Anglican Girls’ School and Caulfield Grammar School.

She holds a Bachelor of Music Education, a Master’s degree in Educational Management and a Professional Certificate in Positive Education from the University of Melbourne.

Having taught extensively in both Junior and Senior School settings, Davina has broad experience in managing curriculum development and the professional learning of teachers whilst focusing on whole school initiatives that nurture and sustain a culture of collaborative learning.

Davina is a strong advocate of empowering today’s students to be a generation of self-directed, lifelong learners who display ongoing ownership and commitment to learning with passionate purpose and strong curiosity.

She is an author of curriculum resources that are used in schools throughout Australia and overseas.

Sebastian Earle, Head of Junior School

Sebastian was appointed Head of Junior School in September after acting as Head of Junior School throughout 2016.

Sebastian joined Kilvington as a Junior School teacher in 2011. During his time here, Sebastian has worked as a Junior School Teacher and has held the roles of Prep – Year 2 Junior School Coordinator and Junior School Administration Coordinator.

Sebastian holds a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) degree. He has particular strengths in leadership and pastoral care.

Matt Brinson, Head of Senior School

Matt has completed a Bachelor of Science (Zoology, Marine Science and Geography), Graduate Diploma of Education and Master of Education (Science and Information Technology). He has taught at Deakin University, Beaconhills College, Methodist Ladies’ College, and Northcote High School.

Aswell as Head of Senior School, Matt is the former Academic Dean of Science and oversees the Pastoral Care of all students Years 7-12. 

As an educator, Matt is passionate about instilling respect for self and others in the community of which acceptance, celebration and appreciation of diversity is a cornerstone. His overall goal is to help students develop a love for learning, to teach clear thinking based on research, analysis and problem-solving, and to set and achieve realistic and fulfilling goals.

Hirian Hanson, Director of Business

Joining Kilvington in 2018, Hirian brings 20 years’ experience in strategic planning, project management, corporate governance, financial management and leadership and negotiation skills in the education and commercial sectors.

His 11 years’ experience in the education sector includes senior management roles with Fintona Girls’ School and St Margaret’s, Berwick, Grammar School.

Hirian has a double degree in Accounting and Computing, is a past President of the Australian School Business Administrators (Vic), and currently is a Fellow of the Australian Certified Practising Accountants (CPA).

Camilla Fiorini, Director of Marketing and Development

Camilla has more than 30 years marketing, communications and PR experience in senior management, consulting and startup roles in Melbourne and Sydney.

A strategic thinker, her experience includes general management and business development, stakeholder management and community engagement, brand development, public relations, campaign development, and social media strategy and implementation.

Prior to Kilvington, Camilla held marketing and communications roles with the Australian Childhood Foundation, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the Australian Scholarships Group.

Camilla has worked as a freelance journalist with The Age, BRW, and marketing magazine, B&T.

Liz Chegwin, Director of Admissions

Liz joined Kilvington Grammar as Director of Admissions in 2015 bringing with her a unique combination of teaching, administration, management, and customer service experience.

She previously held the position as Registrar and Enquiry Manager with the Australian International School (AIS) in Singapore. She also held a teaching position with the AIS.
Liz has held roles with Stage and Screen Travel and Qantas.
Liz is a qualified primary and secondary teacher specialising in Biology and Health Education, and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science.

Dean of Operations

Alex was appointed to the role of Dean of Operations in 2019. She has since been appointed to the School Executive.

She has extensive experience in managing the day-to-day operations in an education setting including time-tabling and daily organising. Alex has successfully introduced new programs to streamline business processes increasing efficiencies and staff morale.

Alex also has a teaching background specialising in Performing Arts.

She has a Master of Business Administration, Postgraduate Certificate of Education, and BA hons in Popular Music and Recording. She is a member of AHRI (Australian HR Institute) and a Life Member of ADMIS (Association of Directors of Music in Independent Schools).

Made up of teachers, ex-teachers, business representatives and local community members, the role of Kilvington’s Board is to ensure that the School retains a secure financial footing, as well as continuing to grow and positively expand. All decisions affecting Kilvington’s future welfare are discussed by the Board before their implementation. The Board members are dedicated to ensuring Kilvington’s future academic and financial success.

Professor Jayashri Kulkarni MBBS, MPM, FRANZCP, PhD, AM – Board Chair

Professor Kulkarni, was appointed as the chair of Kilvington’s Board in April 2012. She is a former student and has two daughters, both who have graduated from Kilvington. Jayashri has had a long and distinguished career working at Monash University specialising in the field of mental health. She is currently the Professor and Director of the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre.

An expert in Women’s Mental Health, Jayashri was elected the President of the International Association of Women’s Mental Health, a role she commenced in 2017.

Jayashri was awarded an Order of Australia (AM) as part of the Queen’s Birthday Awards 2019 for her outstanding contribution to medicine in the field of psychiatry.

Gail Bergmann, Bachelor of Business (Accounting), Member of Institute of Chartered Accountants, Australia

Gail was appointed to the Board in December 2012 and her expertise is in the field of governance, audit and risk management. Gail has been a Director of Risk Services at Deloitte, a Principal at Ernst & Young and is currently the Manager of Internal Audit at IDP Education. 
Leanne Whitechurch,  B.A., LL.B (Hons), LL.M.

Leanne joined the Board in 2014 to provide legal expertise and counsel. She has 20 years legal experience working locally and internationally as an in-house solicitor, with law firms and as a university lecturer.

Sarah McSwiney, Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering (Hons), MBA, MAICD

Sarah joined the Board in 2016 to provide strategic expertise, her vast knowledge of compliance, and counsel to Kilvington’s Alumni program. Since leaving Kilvington Girls Grammar in 1999, Sarah has pursued an impressive career in the aviation and aerospace industry as a design, liaison and lead engineer with organisations including Boeing Aerostructures Australia, Hawker de Havilland and EADS Space Transportation.

Richard Moore, Master of Arts with Honours (Economics); Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland

Richard was appointed to the Board in April 2019 and his expertise is in the fields of finance, governance, commerce and strategy. Richard is currently the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of software company MYOB, responsible for all aspects of finance, compliance and risk management.

Sheri Johnston,  Bachelor of Arts (Economics), Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia, FGIA

Sheri was appointed to the Board in April 2019 and has almost 30 years of professional experience within the areas of governance, change management, leadership, financial management, risk management, process improvement and compliance. Sheri is currently Director Finance at Unison Housing Limited.

Bruce Simons, M Ed Leadership, Policy and Change (Monash), Grad Dip Ed Admin and Policy (Monash), B Ed (Deakin), GAICD

Bruce joined the Kilvington Board in April 2020. He brings more than 40 years’ executive and strategic experience in the local and international education sector including Head of School at the Australian International School in Hong Kong and as Chief Executive Office of Lord Somers Camp and Power House.

Bruce has a deep understanding of the Australian education sector having served over 16 years as Principal with The Hamilton and Alexandra College, in which time enrolments increased by 66 per cent and considerable capital works were completed. Prior to this, he worked at Haileybury College where he held the roles of Year 12/VCE Coordinator, Dean of Extension (VCE Preparation and Revision) Programs, Senior Head of House and Head of Football. 

Jeremy Hanger, B.Comm and B.Eco, B.Bus (Hons), CPM
Jeremy was appointed to the Board in July 2020 to provide strategic expertise in marketing, communications, customer experience, innovation and digital technologies.

During his career, Jeremy has held marketing and sales leaderships roles in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), automotive, construction and technology sectors leading teams in some of Australia’s most respected organisations such as Foster’s Group, Ford Motor Company and Henley Properties. He brings strong commercial acumen together with expertise in brand strategy and customer-centricity.

Everard Hunder, Master of Marketing, Bachelor of Journalism
Everard was appointed to the Board in July 2020. He brings expertise in the fields of marketing, customer experience and reputation management.

Over his career, Everard has held marketing leadership roles with Monash IVF Group, Australian Red Cross Blood Service, Spotless Group Limited, Genetic Technologies Limited and CSIRO.

Everard also worked as a media advisor to the former Victorian Education and Training Minister Lynne Kosky.

In 2018, Everard was recognised as one of the top 50 Marketers in Australia as judged by CMO Magazine Australia (IDG).
